“What laser level do I need? What laser level should I buy? What Is this the best laser level for me?” …
… man … I can’t believe how many questions like this I hear every single day from people!
But don’t you worry. That’s why I’m here. I am here to assist you. Choosing a laser level it’s not an easy task … especially due to the fact that you have sooo much information out there nowadays … which most of it, it’s really bad quality!!!
BTW … if you feel like you don’t have time to read all this article, here is what our preferred ninjaOption is for the Best Laser Level 2018, click here to see it on Amazon.
I’ll try to answer most of your questions in this epic laser level buying guide.
Oh yeah … it’s finally ready ninjas. It took me some time to put together this impressive best laser level article.
Why it took me so long?
Well, I am committed to quality. Whether it’s in my personal life, on the Construction site or here on the blog, I only do something if I know I’ll do it 100%.
I don’t start anything if I’m not sure that I will provide good service or good quality.
So let’s get right into it because there is a loooooot of good information.
Whether you’re constructing a new build; remodeling or renovating; leveling floors; laying out wall or floor tiles wallpapering or simply hanging a picture, a self-leveling laser level is a must-have tool for strengthening the arsenal of anyone on the front line of Construction.
Follow these two steps in order to buy the best laser level for your needs
That’s all it is, two steps!!!
So today’s articles it’s all about guiding you to find out which is the best laser level on the market for PROS and DIYers and how to choose a laser level for your specific need.
Even if you are not working in the Construction Industry there are so many benefits of owning and knowing how to use a Precision Laser Level.
How many times on your day off your wife or husband told you is time to do some rearrangements around the house to give it a new fresh look?!
Sounds familiar ?!
I remember myself when I did a little refurbishment in our flat, unfortunately for myself, I did not use any laser level and some of my work was affected because of that.
Not big of a deal…
But I’ve had to lose a great amount of time redoing parts of the job. Things like the curtain stick weren’t straight, one side lower than the other, some cabinets not at the same level …
I mean, I’m sure you are getting the point…you need to have one of this great tools whether you are a DIY fan looking to do bits and bobs around the house or a professional who wants to achieve high-quality service and happy customers.
Anyway …enough blah blah blah for me … let’s dig in 🙂
Step #1 – How to Choose the Best Laser Level
How to choose the best laser level based on your purpose for using it?
This will be the first question that you need to answer when looking to buy a laser level.
What is the purpose of buying a laser level?
Are you a…
A) DIY enthusiast or
B) a PRO in the Construction Industry?
Depending on what you have answered here, I’ll give you different guidelines to make it easier.
So here we go, we’ll start with recommendations for a DIYer.
A) FOUR Things to Look for When Buying a Laser Level as a DIY enthusiast
I know a lot of DIY enthusiasts that would love to acquire one of this excellent leveling tools. Some might use it for hanging pictures, or any other jobs like hanging shelves.
Basically, they need a laser level for home use.
In this case, I recommend you to buy a decent laser level but not necessarily expensive.
You might not even use it as much as you are planning to in the first place.
But let’s see these four things I consider you should look at before buying a laser level for homeowners.
1. Price – How much should you pay for a laser level?
If you are a DIYer, the first thing you should look at is … the price tag.
Because you should not spend the same amount of money on a laser level as a professional should. ( unless you want to, which is perfectly fine, but you don’t need to). The pros have different needs than a DIYer.
Although you both want to have decent tools at the end of the day.
So, laser level price … don’t spend more than $100 (£€) on a laser level for home uses. You can have decent laser level for that price.
Below, when we get to talk about different types of laser levels, I will recommend you some of the best laser levels under 100 or some of the best laser levels for homeowners.
For now, let’s carry on and get to the second thing that you need to consider …
2. Self-leveling vs Manual Leveling – Which one is better?
Yes, a self-leveling laser level can be much easier to use and by the way, the difference between them in price is not that big anyway.
It could save time as well.
Because using a manual laser level you need to spend the time to make sure you level it properly.
And it’s more …
Not only you need to spend few minutes to properly set up the laser level, but you have to check it every now and then as well to make sure it didn’t move.
Do you really want that?
I thought so!
Then do yourself a favor and buy a self-leveling laser level. I DO RECOMMEND IT.
Next on our list is …
3. Range – How far the Device can project the laser lines
This one it shouldn’t really be very important for a DIYer. The reason why is because if you do DIY around the house, most of the laser levels have a minimum range of 9-15 meters.
And you are more than covered with that kind of range.
But do check out this feature in case you want something a bit more towards the professional side features.
And finally …
4. Dot, Line or Rotary laser level … Which one should you buy?
Well, again will depend on what you are going to do with it!
But generally, for most DIYers, the best laser level to use around the house it’s a laser level that projects lines horizontally and vertically at the same time.
Honestly, having a cross-line laser level covers most of your needs.
Don’t stress yourself too much with deciding. Just follow the above steps and you’ll be well on your way to buy a decent laser level for homeowners.
If you still need more guidance…keep reading. In the next section, I’ll give you specific examples of which laser levels you could buy.
For now, let’s read what I recommend to the PROS or just skip to the next part for DIYers.
B) FOUR Things to Look for When Buying a Laser Level for Construction PROS
If you are construction professional, it makes a lot of sense for you to go only after the best tools. After all, that is how you can achieve ninja level execution, by using only the best tools available to you.
Best laser level, perfect job execution, happy customer … more money into your pocket, right?
So, if this is you, then keep reading as well as the DIYer. Because below we’ll talk about another kind of decisions that you need to think about before buying the best laser level for your line of work or DIY project.
But basically, if you are a pro, you should not look at the price tag here…Instead look for the following:
1. Accuracy – This is what a pro wants
For a DIYer, I thought that looking at the price should be the first thing to look at.
But in this section, we approach things with different eyes. What you need here basically, is (whatever laser level you choose) you need a laser level that can be as accurate as possible.
At the end of the day, you are making money by charging your clients for professional services.
So, you don’t want to compromise your work quality by choosing a laser level that’s $50-$60 dollars cheaper than what we, the professionals are using…day in-day out … just to save a few pennies.
I found out over the years, on my own skin, that “saving money” when buying tools … it’s not an option, it’s actually putting the money into the bin.
So, you want QUALITY, ACCURACY AND HEAVY DUTY laser level for a PRO.
Next thing we need to look at is how far the laser can project the laser lines.
2. Range – The further the better
Another important thing to consider it’s the range. On huge projects like the ones that I’m working on, you will definitely need a laser level that can project far and you can still have good visibility of the laser lines.
So check out the visibility and range of the laser level that you want to buy.
One thing to remember here:
Nowadays, you have laser levels with RED and GREEN laser lines.
Just remember, that the green laser level lines are much more visible in daylight and at longer distances than the red laser level lines.
That’s why they are a little more expensive as well, because of the latest tech they have included in them.
If you have the budget … I will most definitely recommend you to go after the one with green lines.
3. Heavy duty – Avoid the lasers made all of plastic
Some laser levels are made from plastic on the outside.
Even the most expensive ones !!!
I would avoid buying the ones made of plastic and look for laser levels build with aluminum and rubber on the outside.
The rubber will absorb the shock and your $200-$500 (£€) tool it won’t break that easily.
Even if it’s not made of plastic, I still need to remind you that this kind of equipment it’s very fragile and needs extra care when manual handled.
4. Warranty – Make sure your laser level has warranty
One thing that I can’t stress enough when advising my friends to buy laser levels … is
DOES IT COMES WITH WARRANTY?
Yes, you should really read about this before you buy. At the end of the day, these tools are really expensive and you don’t want to trash your laser level after only 2 months of using it.
Good brands products do break as well (less often, but they do)
So you want to cover your ass here and ask about the warranty, what covers and for how long!
Alright, let’s move on to the next and last step
Step #2 Choose Your Laser Level Model
Let’s have a look at the types of laser levels that you can buy and see which one is for you.
I’m sure many of you don’t know how many laser levels models are out there and what you can use each one for, right?
I mean, I didn’t and I was working in Construction for almost one year before I’ve started to learn.
And it’s normal, some trades simply don’t use the same tools. Or some trades don’t use the same tools as often as other trades.
For example, an electrician is not using a laser level as often as a drywall installer.
These are common laser levels that you can find out there (to my knowledge)
- Point laser level
- Line laser level
- Crossline laser level
- 360 rotary laser level
I’ll go into each one of them in a second.
And I will simplify it as much as I can so everyone can follow. As well I’ll let you know at the end of each section which laser level I recommend you and whether it’s for the DIYer or for the PRO.
Let’s do it then.
1. Best Point Laser Level – Which one I recommend for you
These laser levels create single or multiple dots that can be utilized as reference points or to ensure correct alignments.
This type of device is often used a digital replacement for the traditional plumb bob.
Some of this laser levels are really simple. To be honest, there are so simple that I wouldn’t spend the money on them unless my job requires a point laser level specifically.
But this kind of laser level could be an excellent tool for electricians or plumbers, as well for DIYers that need for instance to transfer a point from the floor to the ceiling.
Installing a new ceiling lamp?
This tool could be very helpful. You make the measurements, place the laser level on the floor and boom … you just need to make the hole in the ceiling!
Simple as that!
So let’s have a look at some of the best point laser levels that you can find on the market.
Actually, to make it EXTREMELY EASY for you to decide, I’ve chosen only 4 models.
As a first option for the construction professionals, I’ll go after PLS. The PLS-60595 model it’s a 3 point laser level.
And for the DIYer … you can choose between the 2 Bosch Laser Level models below. The difference between the two it’s not only the price, but you will quickly realize that one it’s a 2 point laser level and the other one has 3 laser level points.
Point Laser Level Comparison Chart
User Manuals for Point Laser Level models
Alright, let’s jump to the next type of laser level from our category …. the ones that project lines instead of points!
2. Best Line Laser Level for DIYers and Construction Pros
The good thing about each one of these tools is that their functions are really easy to understand.
Nothing to fancy.
So this laser level projects lines horizontally or vertically. The thing to remember here is that this particular item WON’T BE ABLE to project horizontal and vertical lines AT THE SAME TIME.
It will either be horizontal or vertical.
Again, very simple and easy to use tools.
This is what I believe to be the best line laser level for home users and DIYers.
The one that I most like here it’s the Black & Decker BDL190S BullsEye of course.
And the reason why is because it’s an extremely useful tool. Not only has laser level functions but it’s a stud finder as well.
So it’s worth the money 100%.
You are getting tow tools in one for your money.
One genuine advice:
If you are a builder, don’t buy a line laser level … go for at least a cross-line laser level.
But, if you really want to have this gadget in your toolbox, go for the same one that I’ve recommended to the DIYer, the amazing Black & Decker BDL190S BullsEye laser level and stud finder.
It could come handy at times …

Next, we’ll talk a little about my favorite type of laser level, the cross-line laser level.
3. Best Cross-Line Laser Level
If you have followed me until here on this laser level guide … you should know by now or at least, have an educated guess about what this laser level does, right? 🙂
Exactly … it creates a cross, a 90-degree angle when the horizontal and vertical laser beams are both switched on at the same time.
Known for their versatility the Cross-Line type is the most popular precision level. The better Cross-Line lasers on the market offer the option to use the horizontal and vertical lines independently.
I can clearly say that this is the best laser level for builders.
Especially if your trade is doing more indoor jobs, like carpenters, drywall installers, metsec (metal studs) fixers and so on. Most of the trades are using this one for being so versatile and does almost everything!
From hanging picture and shelves to installing kitchen cabinets and create new walls, decking, and fence installation and so so so much more … this type of laser level can do almost all the tasks…
Can’t make you a coffee though 🙂 … but for the rest, it’s probably the best laser level for construction sites or home renovation projects.
It’s most builders GO TO type of laser level. And I love it too.
And for the PROS (and for the more serious DIYer as well, if you have the budget of course) … I recommend buying the DeWalt 089K
The amazing thing about the DeWalt 089K laser level is that PROJECTS A THIRD LASER LINE to aid with the 90 degrees applications.
This one it’s really awesome.
If you don’t have the budget go for the BEST SELLER on Amazon and that is the DeWalt 088K
Let’s see four options that I really like and I firmly believe that these are some of the best laser levels on the market for this category.
Compare the Best Cross-Line Laser Levels for Construction Workers and DIYers
User Manuals for Cross-Line Laser Levels
And finally … the rotary laser levels, the fourth and last of our category of laser levels that exist out there.
4. Best 360 Rotary Laser Level – Best for outdoor uses
This larger, heavier duty laser level, mainly used on construction sites, creates a 360-degree horizontal line. They are often mounted on sturdy tripods in order to keep a consistent footing.
Rotary lasers are actually a single rotating laser that tricks the human eye into believing it is seeing a solid line.
This tool is designed more towards construction sites rather than home applications.
But please don’t be sad 🙂
You can still have one if you love DIYing. I just can’t find too many home applications for it in order to justify the investment.
As I said already, a cross-line laser level is perfect for homeowners.
But hey…it’s your money!
This article, it’s meant to guide you on how to buy a laser level … so let’s keep going with our guide.
Just so we can keep it consistent, remember, that if you are a DIYer you should try to keep it under $100 (£€). You must really have a good reason to spend the money on this item.
Especially because we will not find a decent 360 rotary laser level for less than $100 (£€)
Maybe if you want to do some really serious improvements to your home.
Or maybe a garage extension where you might need to set up some new pillars and all that heavy construction stuff…but if none if that is going on at your place … then I will not recommend you to buy a laser level as a homeowner or a DIYer.
But if you are a PRO … please let me recommend to you a couple of tools.
I’ll just mention one that we use a lot in our projects. It’s not for everyone’s pocket though, quite an expensive laser level. I’m talking about the Leica Rugby Laser Levels of course. I’m just going to leave you a quick link here in case you are curious to read about them.
And I’ll show another one that our ninjas are saying great things about it, the Topcon Rotary Laser Level.
The good news is …
The second one it’s much cheaper than the one that we use.
Still excellent tool but cheaper.

Other Things to Consider
We have talked and given examples of four types of laser levels that exist out there.
We’ve talked about what to look for when buying a laser level depending on what are you going to use it for and that is either for professional tasks or domestic uses.
There are other little things to consider, but honestly, sometimes the more info you have, the more difficult it’s to make a good decision.
On top of choosing the type of laser that most suits your needs there are
A few more things you need to consider when making your choice, such as:
- Battery Life
But that should be all you need to know. Just prioritize the points I’ve made earlier, and you can be sure that by following them … you are making a good choice.
Has this article been amazing so far?
I hope it made things easier for you!
Because I won’t stop just yet 🙂
Find Out More
This next section’s very good for the skimmers, so in case you don’t like to read a lot, (I agree, this EPIC Laser Level Buyer’s Guide it’s huge) … then you’ll love this next section.
So let me carry on with this laser level buyer’s guide by giving you a BONUS list of specific tasks that you can do with a laser level.
What you’ll find next is a very straight to the point list of laser levels that I believe are the best for a specific task or trade.
How do I know that?
Based on our experience, of course, mine and my colleagues’ expertise using these tools!
So here we go:
Best Laser Level for Specific Tasks or Trades (DIYers and Construction PROS)
I will keep editing this list as we discover more and more which are the best leveling devices for these specific tasks.
You can add yours as well!
Just shoot me a quick message here. You should say what was the laser level you used for, what was the task and why you loved it! Plus, whatever other details you want to add.

But this is what I know so far:
1. Best Laser Level for Hanging Pictures
I’m sure many DIYers are asking themselves this question.
How can I achieve a perfect picture gallery wall?
That, of course, will depend on how creative you are but in order to assist you with doing the job itself … I recommend using a laser level to hang pictures straight and nicely leveled!
This should be a very straightforward job if you use a laser level instead of a bubble level.

Ah … before I forget! I have a more in-depth article about hanging picture laser level here if you want to check it out!
2. Best Laser Level for Electricians
All of those sparkies out there … I have the right answer for you.
I went to my site and asked the electricians what are they using a laser level for.
Not for too many things!
They’ve told me that they are using rarely the laser level … but it’s extremely important for them to have it.
Some jobs, for example, installing downlights or hanging many lamps in a raw, a laser level will come extremely handy.
This is what I recommend based on what my electricians’ colleagues have told me about how they are using a laser level and for what purposes.

3. Best Laser Level for Tillers
Opinions are divided here, some tilers love to use a laser level and others … they love the old school way of doing things.
But, despite their differences, most tilers are using the laser level as an auxiliary tool for wall tile installation or they can have a flooring laser level to assist laying out a bathroom or a kitchen floor.
I personally find them very helpful for tilling.
Read my article about the best laser level for tilers … where I go more in depth and talk about some other laser levels as well.
Check Price And Read Reviews on
And the DeWalt DW089K could be a very interesting option as well. Being able to create 90 degrees angle is perfect for tilling. I’m going to refer it below, so check it out.
4. Best Laser Level for Builders (for trades that work mostly indoors )
What I’ve seen on my colleague’s toolboxes (carpenters, kitchen fitters, and drywall installers) is that most of them are using a DeWalt cross-line laser level.
By the way, check out one of my articles where I talk about the best laser level for builders.
Some are using the DeWalt 088K and others, especially the drywall installers … they are going for the DeWalt 089K (Red or Green laser level line) because of the THIRD laser line that this laser level features.
It’s awesome for 90 degrees applications. It’s my favorite laser level at the moment.
Check Price And Read Reviews on
There is a new version of this model that has a brighter laser line. It’s stronger because it uses green light laser lines.
Did you know that great light it appears brighter to the human eye than the red light?
I didn’t know that until this new version of the DW089 came out.
Be adviced: It’s more expensive than the one using RED light.
5. Best Laser Level for Construction (mostly used by ground workers and engineers)
I’ve always felt that a lot of the responsibility on a construction site relays on the shoulders of a good engineer.
And that is because everything could go to sh#t if he/she doesn’t make the right measurements 🙂
The good news …
Is that if you read correctly the plan and have a good tool to work with … then, the chances of the above to happen … are very slim!
This is what I recommend for this section based on what my colleagues (engineers and ground workers) have told me about their experience with their tools.

6. Best Laser Level for Framing Walls
I did mention a couple of times my colleagues in the drywall business.
This job COULDN’T EXIST if we wouldn’t have laser levels.
It’s amazing how these guys depend on a laser level to do the job.
Of course, you could say: “What’s wrong with the measure tape and pencil?”
And you’re right … but how long do you think it will take them to do it? … A LOOOT
Carpenters as well are using the laser level for this task, so it could be an excellent tool for framing with both timber and metal studs.
Again, I’m going for the DeWalt 089K … the best laser level for this task.

7. Best Laser Level and Stud Finder
If you’ve never heard of this one before, let me quickly tell you what it is and what it does.
So this little piece of kit can locate the studs behind a wall.
Why do you need to know that?
Well, let’s say, for instance, you want to hang your tv on the wall.
Well, it could be … if you try to hang your tv straight on the drywall sheet. What we would like to do is to find the stud behind the wall (could be metal or wood) and screw our tv support onto the studs for more security.
How does it work?
It’s like a metal detector if you want. Can detect the metal studs or if it’s wood … by the way … how is it going to find the wooden studs if the stud finder can detect metal?!
🙂 Yep … you’re right … by detecting the metal screws that are holding together the drywall sheet and the stud.
The modern stud finders work by detecting density changes in a wall.
For this task, I recommend you the Black & Decker BDL190S BullsEye, for being an excellent tool for this job…
And the best part … it’s a multi-function tool. It’s a laser level and a stud finder.

8. Best Laser Level for Kitchen Cabinet Installation
Installing kitchen cabinets it’s one of the most simple jobs if you have the right tools at hand of course.
Why I am saying that?!
Because when I did the renovation on my own flat … I didn’t have all the tools that I was needed to make the job.
So instead of a few hours … it took me almost 3 days. (and the kitchen wasn’t that big)
One of the tools that I didn’t have with me on this job … was a laser level as you would’ve guessed!
Why would you use a laser level to install kitchen cabinets?
Simply because the floor it might not be always at the same level. And your kitchen might suffer damages if you don’t take extra care to make sure it’s all properly leveled. The part that will most suffer is the doors … because the doors will not open and close properly for being unleveled.

If you need help with installing your kitchen cabinets, just give me a shout. I’ll do my best to assist you.
Check out this video on how to install kitchen cabinets using a laser level:
The guys in this videos are using a different laser level than the one I’m recommending. It’s a PLS, so if you are a PLS fan and say “I need a PLS laser level” 🙂 … check it out above, on the best laser level for electricians.
But I like more the DeWalt DW088K laser level for installing kitchen cabinets.
